installed 12.1 no desktop icons just wallpaper

I've reinstalled 12.10 5 separate times, but still to no avail.:(

Generally, we recommend a more recent release, like 13.10. Or (coming in April) 14.04.
12.10 will reach end-of-life in April, and will not be supported after.

We're not psychic, so can you please describe some of the install problems?
