freeze after upgrade

After a normal software update this morning my computer freezes after about 2 minutes of use. No pattern, any program I use either freezes or crashes. No major program updates or kernal updates, just minor programs. How can isolate which one is causing me problems and uninstall or reinstall previous?

what packages did you upgrade?
the problem did not appear before the upgrade?

You can run command [CODE]top[/CODE in a xterm (ctrl+alt+T) in order to see if there is any program using a lot of memory or CPU which could be the cause of the freeze.

this problem apparently resolved itself, I tried booting into recovery mode, which ground on for about 30 min and finally hung. after a hard reboot, an unusual boot screen, it worked fine again. I'll continue to poke around to see if I can make any sense of it.
