I'm very new to Linux so I need a Windows-like UI. I have tried Cinnamon 1.8/2/0 on Ubuntu 13.10 (in a VM) and Cinnamon 1.8 on Ubuntu 13.04. None of the combination worked. It either crashes or the start menu freezes when I click on it. From reading through some threads it seems like this is caused by the new Ubuntu having the Unity UI, is there an Ubuntu distro without the Unity UI? Or is there another Windows-like theme that will work with Ubuntu 13.xx? Thanks.

Try Xubuntu which can be configured to look like almost anything else, or add xubuntu-desktop to your system to try it out first.

It uses the XFCE desktop, similar to gnome 2 which has now gone, replaced by Mate, but has been kept more up-to-date in my opinion.

See my screenshot of my desktop as an example. I still like desktop icons (I'm old-fashioned, [and old]) but I also use a side autohidden panel with launcher icons as well, as you can see.
