Is Installation as easy as using a bootable build of ubuntu variety x

On any "unusual" device, your best bet is ALWAYS to first boot with a LiveCD/LiveUSB of the intended Linux distro. That will enable you to find out how well that distro detects the hardware and installs working drivers.

Unfortunately, lack of specialized drivers is also the bane of Linux distros. If the drivers don't get installed, it's not a simple matter of sticking in a CD that came with the hardware and installing drivers from there, because those drivers are nearly always Windows drivers.
