kindly enlightened me on how to update my libreoffice 3 preinstalled at ubuntu 12.4lts to Libreoffice 4.2

Upgrading to LibreOffice 4.2 could hardly be simpler.

Go to this page of the LibreOffice Website (http://www.libreoffice.org/download); select the appropriate version (e.g., 32-bit or 64-bit) of the download; and download the Installer and the Help files in the order prescribed on the download page. Then let the Installer and Help downloads do their work on your computer.

Everything rewyllys says is true and good advice. An alternative is to use the PPA and that will keep you updated with the newest. If you install it manually then you will need to keep installing it manually. The regular updates/upgrades/dist-upgrades should keep Libreoffice up to date with the PPA:
