My Synaptic status filter shows 100's of 'Not installed' packages.
Can I safely remove them (not even sure if they are on the hard drive)?
Right clicking any one only shows 'install' or 'properties'.

How are you going to remove something that isn't on your machine in the first place?
Those packages are on the servers still.
What you see is the list of packages you could install, if you want.

Thank you deadflowr,
I wasn't sure if they resided on my hard drive or not -- hence my question.

If you are using the "Not installed (residual config)" filter it is just the configuration files and folders on your system that remain, not the package itself.

If you know you will not need to reinstall the package in the future you can choose to "remove completely", but those configs take very little space and could possibly be useful if you do ever add that package again.
