View Full Version : [SOLVED] boot into grub shell grub

Hi,

A friend asked me to install Ubuntu on an old Acer travelmate 290 laptop instead of Win XP.
Unfortunately it turned out that after install it always shows the grub 2 shell instead of booting.
When i enter
linux /vmlinuz root=/dev/sda1 ro
then
boot
it works fine.

I installed Ubuntu 12.04 and also tried Lubuntu 13.10 .. same result
I have tried all kind of thing e.g. update-grub install-grub etc.
The disk seems to be ok (at least badblocks says so)

Any help is appreciated (it would be a shame if i had to reinstall Windows ;-) )

Best regards,

Greg

post you grub config file

less /boot/grub/grub.cfg
note the disk in grub are named hd0 hd1 and not sda/or hda/

How large is hard drive?

Some older BIOS do not boot from partitions beyond 137GB. So either a /boot partition or all of / (root) need to be inside the first 137GB of drive. I often suggest 10 to 25GB for / and rest for /home or data partitions so entire drive is still used.

Interesting ... it's 160 GB

I'll try to reduce the size..

Hi Oldfred,

Many thanks! That did the trick!
