I am installing Ubuntu 12 server to a Dell PowerEdge r300 choosing GUI as part of the installation but it gives me no GUI. No prompts at all. The server previously had RedHat so i know it works.

I've tried manually installing desktop gnome but no luck. I'm stumped.

Any quick help would be appreciated.

It turns out Desktop installed but I found in a post that exit must be typed when the screen is blank. Now, how to get rid of that blank scree?....

i just posted a similar problem with Ubuntu 12 server on Dell Poweredge r900s. I am no expert, but the post from SKIDD at the link below worked for me. (on 2 of 3 machines)
