I have to build a new PC this week for some relatives. I'm die-hard pushing family to Ubuntu... Irrelevant.

Anyway, I tried to put this off until April and was unsuccessful. Therefore, would it be best to preload it with 12.04 or 13.10?

At least back in the day, it was always said to upgrade consecutively. I'm not sure if that changed nowadays. It might not even matter?

Advice much appreciated.

derekcentrico; Hi !

The upgrade path in this instance is to the same end;
13.10 will version upgrade to 14.04
12.04 LTS will also directly upgrade to version 14.04 // LTS to LTS version.

You might be better to install 13.10, it has enhancements not available in 12.04, and as well, in my opinion, 13.10 is considerably faster than 12.04. I think the transition from 13.10 to 14.04 will be smoother than that from 12.04 .

you ask and this

is what I think

12.04 is supported for 5 years; 13.10 for 9 months.

Thanks for the input. I guess 13.10 is winning. Any other thoughts out there?

@ibjsb4 - I'm not worried about the release support timeline. My only concern is the best chance of no problems upgrading from whatever release I install this week to 14.04 in April.

14.04 is supported until April 2019 if that helps.

Right. 14.04 is the end result in April. However, I am trying to determine WHICH current release to install now that way there is less of a chance of things screwing up when the user upgrades to 14.04 in April.

13.10. If everything was perfect it wouldn't really matter but being that it is a new machine you want the latest hardware support available.

I second 13.10. I personally only install LTS.

13.10 and you should be able to smoothly upgrade to 14.04 in April...

I just did an update from 13.10 to 14.04 alpha...it was the smoothest experience I have ever had in doing an update. I usually do a fresh install as the update experience with Ubuntu until now has not been very satisfactory. With that said, after the experience of the current update, I would recommend the 13.10 install and then updating to 14.04 final in April.
