After a badly-failed upgrade, the easiest way to clean up my sister's netbook was to reinstall. This time, we used Xubuntu (Unity and Parkinson's just don't work well together.) This time, I did the formatting right, giving her a separate partition for /home. Now, she needs to create some launchers for programs such as firefox. In Xfce, you can right-click on the desktop and the context menu will allow you to create a launcher (or at least, you can set it to do that) but that means knowing exactly where the program is, and she's not technically inclined. Is there an easier way to do this?

In a lot of cases you can just click and drag one of the little icons on the menu list down to the dock and it will show a popup panel for Create New Launcher.

You can also right-click the desktop and select "Create Launcher". In the dialog that pops up, start typing the name of the program that you want in the "Name" entry box and a drop-down list will display the available matching launchers.

Also, depending on the version of Xubuntu that you've installed, you can press Alt+F2, then the down arrow in the entry box, find and drag the application that you want to the desktop.

Thank you. We've found that we can drag a program from the main menu to the desktop, but not if we bring up the menu with a right-click on the desktop, and that's all we're likely to need.
