First, here's some details. I'm using a liveDVD to boot into Backtrack 5. My laptop model is Acer Aspire E1-522.
My wireless card is Atheros Communications Inc. Device 0036 (rev 01) via lspci.

The output for iwconfig is

lo no wireless extensions

eth0 no wireless extensions

I think the problem is that there is no wireless driver installed on BT5, but there is no linux drivers available for the card. So I need help getting the correct drivers installed.
I figure that drivers cant be installed on DVD so I'll gladly install Backtrack 5 on HDD if needed.

I have a hunch that I'll probably have to buy a external USB wifi adapter but which model works best?

Also should I use Kali Linux instead? Will my wireless card be supported on Kail Linux (will there be the drivers I need on it?) ?

Backtrack is no longer under development. Its developers are now producing Kali Linux.

You would probably get better advice a forums.kali.org
