Would anybody know of an image of xubuntu 13.10 stripped down a bit and repacked that could fit on a cd?

Is it important with a CD? In that case you can download the Ubuntu mini.iso (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD) and from that install xubuntu-desktop. If you don't find it as a menu option, you can use the terminal command

sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop

Would that change out programs such as thunar, xscreensaver, and remove gnome's stuff, or would I have to do that manually?
Nevermind, the minimal cd is a text based installer.

The minimal install installs the 13.10 latest kernel. That is all. You install the rest. Installing xubuntu-desktop is pretty much equivalent to then installing Xubuntu into the minimal. That's it.

You can go even more stripped back and just install xfce4 (Xubuntu's desktop environment) and then only the apps you want/need. That's my setup. Zippy.

PS: Didn't understand this: 'Nevermind, mini text based'. So? Is that a good or bad thing?

Very bad thing.

Very bad thing.

? Unsure why, but that is off-topic anyway (and doesn't sound like the mini.iso install is for you).

In that case, use a lighter distro that does have a graphical install environment or install Xubuntu and weed everything out by hand. Boring but do-able.

(Incidentally, the alternate ISO is text based but does exactly the same thing as the desktop ISO, just without the colours! Text based is a very good thing for some as it avoids many of the issues some hardware has with the graphical install.)

Good luck. ;)
