New year, new (almost) everything. Plus both of my OS X themes are broken, so good excuse to change. Ubuntu 12.04 LTS/Unity.

Happy new year!! Hoping 2014 will be an awesome year for Ubuntu especially with 14.04 Trusty Tahr (of which I am very much looking forward to).

That being said, I haven't changed much on my notebook. Still running base lubuntu 13.04 with MATE desktop.

My Asus Vivobook and my desktop (a generic Gateway hooked up to a 23" Dell HD display.) Thanks to Synergy and Dropbox, the arrangement is like a Xinerama display that I don't have to plug in (and with the advantages of having the "external display" have its own CPU.) I've tweaked the Dash to remove shopping and music results (but not other online sources) and always include my Tomboy notes. Software and configuration between the machines is largely identical (and of course I have Tomboy syncing configured through Dropbox.) It's an absurdly comfortable arrangement.

Ubuntu Unity on both machines with minor tweaks. GTK and window themes are from the MediterraneanNight Series (http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/?content=156782) with minor color tweaks; icons are Faenza with Moka actions (which I think blends fairly neatly.)

Having a clipboard manager that updates across both machines thanks to Synergy is absurdly nice as well.

Your ASUS Vivobook almost looks like a Macbook with that wallpaper... Cool setup with the dual displays.

Also, is that a My Little Pony plush doll on your desk? O_o

Copper Bezel
January 4th, 2014, 12:59 PM
Yes and yes. = ) The Vivobook does have a somewhat Macish look, as does the theme, and the wallpaper doesn't help, but I like the small differences (and didn't mind that the price tag was half the Mac's, for that matter.) The pony in the background is Vinyl Scratch, the DJ pony. = )

Faenza is still the prettiest and most complete available. Moka is an upstart with a lot of style, but incomplete in application and status icons. AwOken is a pretty set, but niche (they're monochrome, so not as readable as the default set. Of course, even Faenza and Moka lose readability due to the uniform silhouettes.)

I like flat themes in concept, but I've found I really depend on shadows for readability. I like to be sure where one window ends and another begins, and which is focused. So that theme ... neat, but not for me. = ) (Still doing the macamentary thing, myself.)

Added two letters indicating the state of suspend on lid close and horizontal two-finger scrolling state via xfconf-query :) Also made a custom script to be able to switch these settings via a keyboard shortcut. Otherwise still the same, don't have any reason to change anything :KS

Thanks, I might try Numix once 14.04 is up and I upgrade to new and shiny xubuntu. However, I'll have to fork it as I prefer blue to orange in the menus etc.

I'm not phosphide but it looks like Ubuntu with Gnome Flashback/Fallback session more than MATE (no system menu in the top panel for example). It does look quite like Gnome2 as it was in Maverick and Natty, I've also posted a screenshot of the Gnome Flashback session somewhere in this thread.

I quite like their alt-tab switcher. It's almost like it imposes the dock but only with the icons of running applications. I kind of dig that.

I really like elementary OS as is. But dang, this file manager crashes like it's the number one goal, and Noise (Music) simply not turning on is quite a headache too. Sometimes I just want to drop back to Gnome 3 where I know Rhythmbox and Nautilus, despite its boringness, will just work...

Ahh, alright. I can totally see that. I never really thought twice about it. In fact I kind of liked it at first as I thought Gnome 3's alt-tab switcher was obnoxiously large and unnecessarily sized. Now that my habit has me looking at the bottom of the screen I just hadn't given much of a thought about it beyond what you just described.

I probably have the most boring desktop in the thread, but I might as well post it because I'm that proud of it. I've switched to using Unity full time over XFCE and don't regret it. It looks amazing, modern, and still fits all my needs while feeling like a new experience.

Although I do love how Unity colors itself based on your wallpaper, this color of blue is pure eye candy. Thumbnails are clickable. (Spoiler : Desktop of a huge Vocaloid fan.)

This is my current KDE setup. I'm trying something experimental, somewhat inspired by eOS.

Basically, I liked the way eOS looked, but I took it a step further, I got rid of the application launcher and list on the task bar in favor of ALT+F2 (which has an advanced search feature by default) and ALT+TAB for window switching

I have the following keyboard shortcuts:
metab=chrome
metaz=system settings
metaf=file browser
metak=kate
metav=vlc
ctrl+alt+s=shutdown now
metat=terminal
alt+ds = desktop settings (when desktop is shown)
metad=show desktop

This essentially removes 90% of my mouse usage.

Feel for ya bro. No dual boot either? After my Family was FORCED to use Linux for a year, now they enjoy it greatly and want to keep it for their desktops. We did not have any windows install cds, to fix a broken windows OS. Sometimes it takes time. Sadly speed and stability of programs does not tend to sell people till you get them to use something for a while, than they switch back. (Skype Linux compared to Skype Windows, which on my machine kept on over using the CPU, so BSOD all around.)

There are some amazing desktops on here.

I guess they play lots of games and need Microsoft Office? Ouch, you could probably get a USB HDD for Ubuntu when you use the PC. It's hard to be comfortable using Windows for me now, I had to go fully Ubuntu on this second hard drive.

And you're welcome, Artifical Intelligence. :) eOS is looking amazing.

Pretty standard Elementary OS except added GParted, Firefox and Synaptic.

I love seeing more and more users running elementary OS. They have a great team with a great distro. Still some quirks in the system but with every distro I've tried they have the least amount of quirks, which has effectively halted my distro hopping tendencies.

My elementary OS is stock but I install a bunch of other applications too, some of which are commonly found in a regular Ubuntu or Mint install.

apt-get update && apt-get install audacity vlc hardinfo inkscape etherape cheese kdenlive winff wifi-radar rhythmbox clementine stellarium p7zip-full wireshark soundconverter ncdu bmon meld hdparm devede openssh-server rwho nethogs smartmontools gimp vinagre thunderbird bmon nmap synaptic quassel-client-qt4 liferea gimp htop gparted gdisk backintime-gnome youtube-dl owncloud-client handbrake-gtk firefox openshot gnome-system-monitor gnome-disk-utility baobab clusterssh nautilus

Notice:
gnome-disk-utility >> "Disk Utility" (Disks in newer Ubuntu variants but same application otherwise without the slight visual changes)
gnome-system-monitor >> "System Monitor"
baobab >> "Disk Usage Analyzer"
nautilus >> Nautilis file manager, an absolute must-have IMHO given the insane level of instability Pantheon Files exhibits whenever I open the darn thing (just make sure you comment out the OnlyShowIn line of the nautilus.desktop file so it's accessible in the application menu). This is also why I install Rhythmbox and Clementine since Noise (known on eOS as "Music") works well but has some issues with randomly closing. It's rare-ish but happens enough I typically fire up Rhythmbox. I like Clementine for the features (used it for running the music at my own wedding in late 2012 since it has really nice faded transitions from track to track by default, plus it's solid), but lately I've been giving Rhythmbox another shot since it looks well integrated to eOS and hasn't given me any stability issues.

I fired up my other laptop which had 13.10 on it. I updated it to check a few things out. I am growing increasingly fond of Unity. I still have some frustrations with the way the dash is organized (it's still a mess. I mean, more suggestions, shopping results, recent apps all in one lens? Spare me. Who thought this was okay? Let's not KDEify this... shopping lens in its own lens and drop more suggestions altogether. 2+2=4)...... but given the fact I am a very keyboard centric user and super+a exists for the applications lens (in comparison to super+space to open the launcher in elementary OS, my other main distro), I've learned to like Unity that much more. Plus it's nice having a stable manager and music player out of the box, something eOS is still plagued with despite the fact you can swap them. Unity's level of polish and very decent speed has also been welcome. Once you disable the online search, which saves a number of seconds with each and every thing you type into the lens, and switch to static blur (unity tweak tool) I saw a substantial improvement in performance. I'm going to truck onward with this setup for a bit and see how things fair over time.
