I see this problem mentioned in many places but I don't find instructions on how to handle this if you are a beginner. Is someone aware of a series of instructions that are very explicit on each step to take? All I really know is that my upgrade went fine with no errors but the reboot comes up as a black screen.

A direct upgrade from 10.04 to 12.10 is not possible. You should first upgrade (a fully updated) 10.04 to 12.04 (both are LTS versions), and then from 12.04 to 12.10. (To my opinion 12.04 is preferable, as it is an LTS. If you want the latest, you could try 13.10.)
Upgrading is simple and automatic, but risky, and lasts a long time.

To my opinion it is far better, and certainly much faster, to download 12.10, burn it on a dvd or make a bootable USB stick, and then do an install from this. Gives you a clean install, but you'll have to install your applications again (which is both good and a nuisance, and also takes some time of course).
