if i install ubuntu on this computer will i be able to use the built in media card reader


CPU Type Intel Pentium 4, 3000 MHz (15 x 200)
Motherboard Name Hewlett-Packard Pavilion zv5000 (PF126UA#ABL)
Motherboard Chipset ATI Mobility Radeon 9100 IGP
System Memory 1264 MB (PC2700 DDR SDRAM)

I don't see a reason why you cannot.
Try ubuntu from DVD/USB without installing to see how things fare between Ubuntu and your HP)


EDIT: I think Xubuntu (http://xubuntu.org/) will be better suited for your Pavillion than regualr Ubuntu as it uses less system resources.

My own experience with card readers is different -- so I would say, probably NOT. More than once, I've had to restort to using a USB-plugged card reader because the built-in card reader has not been detected by one Linux distro after another.

Also, with that old an ATI card, you will be relegated to using the default Radeon drivers -- as AMD hasn't made proprietary drivers for that card for years. If the video isn't very good, sorry, that's all you're going to get.

The computer is almost 10 years old. I have a system that old, but all I use it for is to DBAN old hard drives.
