Simple Backup Restore

I am using Ubuntu 10.04. I am having problem restoring my backups. When I tried to restore a file it creates a exclusive folder, but there is nothing in there. I think I might be missing a repository or I did not installed it correctly. I need some help.

Can you elaborate more? How did you backup? What software did you use? How do you restore?
