POVray 3.7 is now AGPL 3.0: please, include it in Ubuntu!

Google didn't help me to find how to suggest to include a software in next releases of Ubuntu.

Latest Persistence of Vision Raytracer release (POVray 3.7 (http://povray.org/)) switched to AGPL 3 licensing (http://www.povray.org/povlegal.html).

I hope it will be included in Trusty Tahr.

It is a Windows program. According to the web site it requires Windows XP or later. Surely it is up to the developers to port the code on to Linux and then package it for Debian? If they are not prepared to do it, then it remains for someone else to take up the burden. Then an application has to be made to include the program in the Ubuntu Software Centre. And before it is allowed into the Software Centre it has to be code audited to make sure that it is safe to use.


The POV-Ray developers also provide officially-supported binaries for selected platforms (currently only Microsoft Windows, but expected to include OS X shortly).

So, no plans to port it to Linux. Do not hold your breath.

As far as I know, POV-Ray 3.7 should compile on any POSIX-compliant system with the required tools (look in the Unix directory for more information):

That's not true. I've used POV-Ray under Linux for almost ten years. They are not releasing binaries for Linux, but this does not mean that the program can't happly be compiled under Linux:
