I have been trying to install Ubuntu 11.10 on my older Dell Optiplex 170L with a pentium 4 processor, 2 gb ram and 500 gb hard drive. I had Ubuntu installed on this machine before but I don't remember what version. It was running
Windows 7 with no problems but I decided I wanted it to be a pure Ubuntu machine. Currently it has no operating system. I get a couple of errors trying to install and the last time it just locked up. Before it let me go to the try Ubuntu and that worked just fine. Any help appreciated! Thanks!!!!

Hello and Welcome

Ubuntu 11.10 has reached end of life so I would start with a supported version and if You have older hardware consider Lubuntu.

Yes, Lubuntu 13.10 is a good option.
Many of the old Optiplex have Intel graphics. If that's the case for you might need to add an xorg.conf (https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/lubuntu-users/2013-November/006117.html) .

I have to agree with both of our Moderators on this: brfarris1973 :)

A lightweight distribution would be more suiting for your Pentium 4 processor.

Puppy Linux is another lightweight distro too-

What errors are you getting?

Installing from a Live CD/DVD? Or usb memory stick?
