I am having desktop environment problems that I think may be related to having installed too many. I have various flavors of Gnome, Unity, plus Cinnamon from Linux Mint, which is my favorite. I'm running 12.04 LTS.
Unity hardly runs at all. Gnome classic runs beautifully. And, of course, Cinnamon. I'm thinking, since I never cottoned to Unity, can I just dump it?

The challenge in taking out any installed DE (installed with other DE's), is that it will take dependencies with it that your other DE's need to function properly.
Tedious, I know, but the most straight forward (easy) way to clean up your system, fresh install.
Linux Mint 13LTS (Maya) Cinnamon, fresh install (zapping all other DE's), and of course, back up your data before install :)

If you like Linux Mint (presumably, either Cinnamon or MATE) why not just install that version of Linux Mint?
