Hi, previously I was using Ubuntu 13.04 with xfce desktop installed. After painfull upgrade to 13.10, the top panel in Ubuntu looks like Xubuntu instead. It sounds wierd, but look at the screenshot below. That is Files and not Thunar, but it looks like Xubuntu theme istead of Ubuntu theme. Another point is the top left corner, the x-+ button certainly looks like Xubuntu theme even though I'm in Ubuntu session. Can anyone help me out figuring what should I do to 'fix' this. There's no problem whatsoever beside the bland look. In any case, when I was upgrading, it got stopped halfway (rather, hang and unresponsive) and had to boot into Xubuntu session to finish the upgrade process.

You may want to look at the tool Myunity (https://apps.ubuntu.com/cat/applications/myunity/). It should allow you to change the transparency of the top title bar.

Hope that helps!

I have it too. Look up your applications using the 'dash home' button and add them to the launcher or drag and drop them to the desktop. The layout is different from gnome 2, but just stumble through it and adjust things to make your operating system home.

If you want to switch back to XFCE you just need to logout and login selecting "XFCE" as the desktop session. If its using the default Ubuntu Login screen it will look something like this (http://linuxlookup.com/files/imagecache/800x600/ubuntu_11.10_login.png)

Hope that helps!

When upgrading you went from Gnome 3.6 to 3.8, so make sure your themes are compatible. 3.6 themes may not display properly in 3.8 .
