I'd like to build an ubuntu installation up from scratch, in order to teach myself more about ubuntu architecture, and linux in general. Installing a simple command-line-only base system used to be easy.. download the alternate install cd and choose that option at boot. However, the Alternate CD's are no longer being released. So what is the easiest way to accomplish a base system installation now? I'm going to to try the minimal iso while i wait for replies, and see how that goes. Suggestions much appreciated!

Take a look at the server downloads. They are without a GUI, and consequently, are a lot smaller.

Here you go
Ubuntu Minimal (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD)

More: How far simple do you want to go?
As an extra note, when you get to the screen to choose a desktop (on the mini.iso)go to the bottom to get to the manual package selection.
The desktop selection are typically metapackages, but if you want to go even further use the maunal package selection for even more slimness.

Thanks for the info, I think the minimal install iso will work perfectly.
