improve c++ script to send keystroke to window

When sending the following shutdown command from a keyboard shortcut:

/usr/lib/indicator-session/gtk-logout-helper -s

A window appears with the question, "Are you sure you want to close all programs and shut down the computer?" This requires an enter keystroke.

The C++ script sends enter to OpenOffice Writer and will also cause Xscreensaver to exit. With gedit and the gnome-terminal, the only effect is to stop the cursor's flashing. With above-mentioned shutdown routine, no keystroke is detected.

Is there a way to improve the script so that the keystroke will be sensed in more environments?
