Lost password

So my friend had an old computer running ubuntu that he hasn't looked at in a while. I found it, he said I could have it, but he forgot his password for admin. There's no password on login, but I can't use sudo. how would I best go about updating ubuntu and creating the admin account for myself?

I would repair sudo first, and then you could do whatever you need. Take a look at this tutorial (http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/fixsudo).
