5 syllables here
7 syllables in this line
this line gets 5 more
traditionally
they have references to
seasons or weather
this tradition now
has mostly been abandoned
in modern haiku
very restrictive.
who can truly emote with
such a strict structure?

Actually, in Japanese, it's U-BU-N-TU WA (five syllables)
The letter N is a syllable to itself when not followed by a vowel in Japanese. When writing haiku in Japanese, the syllable count is actually by syllabic character, hiragana or katakana.

eeeeeh.... that's not what my japanese professor said... He said any "n" not followed by a vowel was not counted as a syllable, but merely part of the previous syllable. He said that was the one "quirk" in the syllabic counts... so that even though, yes, it is it's own syllabic character, it's not an officially counted syllable...
I'll have to ask him again now...
