Heh! I like oldies_but_goodies... :)

You should get a load of my Klipschorns (http://www.klipsch.com/klipschorn-floorstanding-speaker). They were built in 1961 (no kidding).

Nothing better IMO!

On topic, if you know of a better AGP card, let me know. nVidia seems to work the best. ;)

I probably have a 7800 Gs stashed somewhere that you can have though maybe your 7600 Gt is better as it has more ram

(- the only thing I remember for sure was they (76/7800) were bloody expensive back in the day when they came out...

Thanks, but my 7600GT is still working great. Just takes a while to find drivers that have been patched for the latest kernel.

And, yes, they were quite expensive, at the time. I paid over $200, on sale.

I puked a fan last year, and couldn't find a suitable OEM replacement, sooooo...

As is my nature, I over-engineered a solution -- I went with a pipe-cooler and 80mm case fan. LoL! :D

OMG! I saw a pair of these at a hifi show back in the early 70s. The show was held on a stinking hot day in a brand new hotel (all concrete and no airconditioning) and I kid you not, the tech was powering them with what looked like a small tansistor radio that was playing Emmerson, Lake and Palmer's "Tank".
At the end of his drum solo at 4:05 after Palmer's fast snare drum action is phased and panned quickly to the left and right can be heard four very low-pitched drumbeats. This sound is special due to the extremely low frequencies of it.
I swear, concrete was peeling from the walls and 2 girls feinted from over-pressure in their stomach.

/digression to memories

For KH (what is Ser.# or model#) I'll just say: old stuff was far better... Back then, and it is still today... :guitar:Couple of years of difference and they would be as old as I am... I've listened to these on several occasions, and I was young then... I'm ESL guy... ;)

True!

I've powered these things with a variety of amps, over the years -- won't list them here, due to the nature of this thread.

Suffice to say, I'm currently feeding them with a superb-sounding Harman/Kardon AVS 125 (http://reviews.cnet.com/av-receivers/harman-kardon-avr-125/4505-6466_7-9966463-2.html) receiver (main: 45 watts x2).

I've never turned the volume past -20 db -- it's impossible -- it'll damage you and the building. No kidding.

This setup WILL make you physically ill after a few minutes at -30 db -- shakes the house, rattles the dishes, and jiggles your guts, in a very unhealthy manner! My Klipschorns are dressed in "Theater Black" -- similar to the current "Ash Black (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000F3FPKM)" but less grainy. They were designed for stage sound reinforcement (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sound_reinforcement_system#Basic_concept) -- concert halls, et cetera. Turn them down, and it's pure bliss. :D

Back on topic: I *feel* the same way about my rig (see below). I'm sticking with my 'legacy' setup, until it blows up.

It's the functional equivalent of a '55 Chevy with a 454. It just requires some patience, waiting for nVidia to release new drivers -- that's all...

Very impressive VINDSL, unfortanantly the money that you spend on PC's, is something I just plain don't have, because I spend all of my spare money buying the latest Cell Phones (I have both an IPhone 5S and a Samsung Galaxy S4) just to give you an idea of how I go bonkers for the latest Cell Phones and Tablets (I plan to buy a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 soon as well), sorry for getting Off Topic Moderators.

Even a less than a dozen watts will prove enough.

Strike that, I almost forgot that I do have a Dell Inspiron 400 HD with an After Market 120 GB Crucial M500 SSD! Lubuntu 14.04 Updates go very fast on it! :-)

Funny thing you should mention that...

I originally ran my Klipschorns on Marantz tube equipment -- 8b amp (http://www.classic-audio.com/marantz/0008.html) & 7c pre-amp (http://newyork-ia.your-city-ads.com/10001/electronics/marantz-model-7-tube-preamplifier-all-original-1961-price-2000_17386851.html) circa 1960, when they were still being made in New York City with Italian electrical components (yes, I took them apart and looked inside). They actually made the picture-window in my living room modulate in n' out (on 10 watts output) -- got lots of complaints from my neighbors. :)

I sold the 'twins' because I was getting paranoid about replacing the (matched) tubes, if they ever burned out. Only place you could get them, at the time, was Russia (new) and South Africa (rebuilt) and neither was cheap. A dealer in San Diego (one of those guys with ads in the back of audiophile mags) offered me a deal I couldn't refuse. They resell them in the Japanese market, but you need to have connections over there -- the Japanese collectors/audiophiles won't buy from just anybody. I read that these dealers ultimately get double the price they offer you, in Japan, but it_is_what_it_is. If 'the market' won't buy from you, what difference does it make, yes?!?!?

Back on topic, 304.116 is working like a champ -- much more stable than 304.88.

To my great surprise, the nVidia 304.116 / Linux 3.12 stable combo got rid of all the screen freezes everyone has been complaining about, the past few weeks. ;)

I see.

I hate "the latest Cell phones", so not a problem for me. I avoid them like the plague -- on several levels.

In my experience, anyone using one of those things could care less about talking to you -- I just walk away, as soon as they pull one out.

Kinda sad, really.

Heh! I bought the 'twins' from an old guy that I know -- we call him "Rubber Arms", if that gives you a mental image.

Actually, everything on him sags, not just the skin on his arms...

'Rubber Arms' bought them new (when he lived in NYC) and carted them out here to Arizona, when he retired.

He knew I was into audio, and kept bugging me, "Hey, kid, you wanna buy a Marantz? It's just sitting there."

After a year or two of this nonsense, I finally went to his house to look at them, just to shut him up.

OMG! My eyes just about popped out of my head. LoL! :D

Anyway, that's where I got them -- just happened to be in the right place, at the right time...

Will do.

That thread drifted so much, I was getting ready to report it myself. LoL! :D

That's what happens when you start discussing 'legacy' hardware and 'legacy' drivers.

Pretty soon you're thinking more about 'legacies' than hardware and drivers... ;)
