Installing wine is not possible

Hi,

I'm currently running a fresh Ubuntu Saucy and trying to install wine.

After reading online that there will be some archtitecture problems, I started like this:

sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install wine1.4

But the install command gives me an error:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
wine1.4 : Depends: wine1.4-i386 (= 1.4.1-0ubuntu7)
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.


Next, i tried installing from ppa:

sudo apt-get install ppa-purge
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install wine1.7

Which will give me a similar error:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
wine1.7 : Depends: wine1.7-i386 (= 1.7.4-0ubuntu4~saucy1)
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.


Trying to install wine1.7-i386 will lead to other unmet dependencies which I can't resolve!

Does anybody have any ideas?? I'm out of luck on this one ...

Try running

sudo apt-get -f install
See if and what those broken packages are.

I'm guessing you're running 64-bit.
In that case wine will install just normally.
I've never used the arch flag to point to i386 and wine works fine on a 64-bit.

sudo apt-get install wine winetricks
is usually good enough.

Whether installing apps in wine works is another matter entirely.

is usually good enough.

Usually it works quite flawless!

If I try to install wine1.7-i386 directly I'll get this output:

Don't add wine to the apt-get -f install command.
run that as I left it.

sudo apt-get -f install

By upgrade, I hope you mean

sudo apt-get upgrade
and not

sudo apt-get update
The upgrade command will actually upgrade the system, where as the update command updates the packages the system can get.

Jep, did it before. But with the same error.

First, do recognize that the PPA version of wine is supported by the PPA maintainers...not by the community. The community supports software in the Ubuntu Repositories (PPAs are not in there).
Add PPAs at your own risk. Most of the broken Package Managers that I see are due to PPAs.

Second, we need to get your package manager working again.
Disable the PPA (do you know how?)
Purge all PPA packages that did install. (do you need help locating them?)
Undo the --add-architecture=i386
Confirm that your package manager is working with a sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

Third, after your package manager is working properly try adding wine again
First try sudo apt-get install wine
If you get error messages, show us the session

Getting rid of the wine-ppa (there is nothing installed from it)

sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ubuntu-wine-ppa-saucy.list*


sudo dpkg --remove-architecture i386
Did give me an error:
dpkg: error: cannot remove architecture 'i386' currently in use by the database
So i manually removed 'i386' from /var/lib/dpkg/arch



sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
... showed the usual (clean update, no upgrade needed)

Finally:

sudo apt-get install wine
... gives me the same error again:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
wine : Depends: wine1.4 but it is not going to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

Two things to try:

sudo dpkg --configure -a
This may clarify the dependency problem

dpkg -l | grep wine
This will tell us if any wine packages are (unexpectedly, unknowingly) installed...causing the problem.

Neither of the commands showed any output.


I followed the trail of unmet dependencies and in the end 'wine1.4-i386' seems to be missing:
E: Package 'wine1.4-i386' has no installation candidate

Alright ... I think I got it...

What I did from the beginning:

This site: https://wiki.debian.org/Multiarch/HOWTO suggests to make /etc/apt/sources.list support multiarch by adding [arch=amd64,i386] to the deb-line. e.g.:


deb [arch=amd64,i386] http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ saucy universe


Next I added the PPA again (because I need the newest Version of wine) and took care that dpkg recognizes i386.


sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
sudo apt-get update

Update of the database now showed separate amd64 and i386 repos to be loaded.


Next I switched to aptitude, because of the more sophisticated dependency-solver:


sudo aptitude --full-resolver -f install wine1.7

What I did in short:
- aptitude suggested a solution where wine1.7 would not be installed
- This solution was rejected with 'r 6'
- The new suggestion was to downgrade both libudev1 and udev by one version (All dependencies met!)
- i did that! AND: it works!
