Hi,
I've a puzzling issue here and would like to find a solution for that. I was about to install a modified Ubuntu 10.04 (called CAELinux) in parallel to a Windows 7 on my system. I did this several times on different Hardware. This is the first time that the following problem occurs.
During installation (via LiveDVD) Ubuntu 10.04 doesn't recognize my devices, i.e. gparted doesn't show anything but a grey background, stating "No device detected". Although I definetely want to install the CAELinux (Ubuntu 10.04) I tried installing a standard Ubuntu 12.04 and succeeded. Its disk utility shows two ATA HDDs. One of them contains Windows 7, the other contains Ubuntu 12.04. Then I thought that the Ubuntu 12.04 fixed the problem but unfortunately, trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 still fails due the same reason as before. Moreover neither Ubuntu 12.04's fdisk nor gparted detect any devices which is strange to me because the installation was successfull.
I've been reading a lot of threads here in the forum concerning the "No device detected" problem but none of them concerns a case like this, in which Ubuntu 12.04 recognizes the HDDs (during installation but not after the installation) but Ubuntu 10.04 doesn't. In those threads a wide range of ideas have been given how to solve the problem but I've no idea where to start, i.e. what's most promising.
Therefor I would like to ask you for advice. I already described my case and would like to append some more information from fdisk or sth. similar but as already mentioned: "fdisk -l" shows empty output. Luckily at least the disk utility shows something (in Ubuntu 10.04 not even the disk utility detected the peripheral devices) and I want to share some information about the HDD and the partitions with you:
247784
Of course I'm willing to provide more information but I don't know which you need in order to help me.
I'm happy for any suggestions how to start fixing this.
Best regards,
Ralf
