I upgraded my Ubuntu server from 12.04 to 13.04 a few months back. Something went wrong in the upgrade, and I haven't been able to use the desktop since. Login works, but desktop never loads properly, there's just an empty screen with a mouse pointer. I have tried re-installing ubuntu-desktop, resetting comzip settings, installing lubuntu-desktop and further upgrading to 13.10, but nothing has helped. It may well be that I have just managed to further mess the things up. Any ideas what to try, or should I just re-install from scratch?

I am having the same issue. I tried dist upgrade from 12.04 to 13.10. Login screen still displays 12.04 lts. After succesful login, just displays desktop wallpaper, mouse pointer... no panels. Tried sudo lightdm in tty1(with password) only to result "Failed to use bus name org.freedesktop.DisplayManager, do you have the appropriate permissions?"

I finally managed to resolve my issue. I hadn't noticed earlier "(EE) GLX error: Can not get required symbols" in Xorg.0.log. This led to case https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1076787.

I have Radeon HD 6450, but don't remember installing fglrx, still there were some fglrx components on the system. Uninstalling fglrx-amdcccle-updates and fglrx-updates already helped, desktop started to load but still without the Ubuntu menu. After removing my .config folder things finally resolved.

Hope this helps others too.
