I am running Ubuntu 12.04 on an Samsung RV510 laptop

In my Update Manager I have the following message:

"Software updates may be available for your computer.
The package information was last updated 9 days ago."

Even though I can download and install some updates in the Update Manager the message persists.

I have tried to use the Terminal Window also with the following commands:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

The results from this is:

"W: A error occurred during the signature verification. The repository is not updated and the previous index files will be used. GPG error: http://extras.ubuntu.com precise Release: The following signatures were invalid: BADSIG 16126D3A3E5C1192 Ubuntu Extras Archive Automatic Signing Key <ftpmaster@ubuntu.com>

W: Failed to fetch http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/precise/Release

W: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead."

After that I opened the Update Manager and I still have the following message:

"Software updates may be available for your computer.
The package information was last updated 9 days ago."

WHat can I do to rectify the problem ?

That indicates that this repo server is currently down:

http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/precise/Release

You might want to try it again tomorrow or try changing the server by opening Update Manager, clicking 'Settings' at bottom left and changing the server in the first tab window.

You have added this repo manually, yes?

Hmm - it was also not working yesterday - but it has been working well for a long time.
What is included in a Repo ? I have added a few sources/applications manually ?
If I click on the http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/precise/Release I get:

A repository is a PPA, or personal package assistant. It basically holds a bunch of apps. You have added this repository (or PPA) manually and whatever server you are accessing it from is either down or the PPA has been removed. Untick that repository in the Software Sources 'Other Software' tab and see if you still get errors.

That link for the repo I gave is not for clicking on, it is the address of the repo. While the PPA may be broken on the server you are accessing it on, it may be fine on another, so as I say, you could try changing servers in the Software Sources 'Ubuntu Software' tab (drop down list of servers).

Ahh I see - thanks.
I tried 3 different servers now - but no luck.

What ppa should I disable ? the ones I have are:

"W: A error occurred during the signature verification. The repository is not updated and the previous index files will be used. GPG error: http://extras.ubuntu.com precise Release: The following signatures were invalid: BADSIG 16126D3A3E5C1192 Ubuntu Extras Archive Automatic Signing Key <ftpmaster@ubuntu.com>

That is the error you need to fix.

If you un-tick the "Independent" repositories it should not then try to access the "extra" repository and you can see if the error goes away.

After you un-tick the Independent server (both source code & main), open a terminal and run
sudo apt-get update

If that runs without any errors, try running
sudo apt-get upgrade to see if your system updates your software.

Thanks for trying to explain - I must be slower than I hoped but as I said - I cannot SEE that this "http://extras.ubuntu.com precise Release" repository is added anywhere.

Untick the 'stebbins' PPAs. Update and report back. If that doesn't clear it, could you open a terminal and issue this:

nano /etc/apt/sources.list

Post the results back here please (between [code] tags if you will). ;)

Not sure what I did - but I followed the instructions - I don't think it worked though - this is the error message after using the "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade":
