The video Nouveau driver appears to be mounted with an incomplete database on install, and therefore can run erratically. Nvidia cards appear to have problems among others. ( I have a NVIDIA 7300LE)
To get the display working simply boot to recovery and select 'resume' which puts the display at low resolution. Rebooting at this point may correct the display although it might be only temporary as rebooting again may lose the settings.
A better solution is to shelve the Nouveau driver until it is fixed and go to the propietary Nvidia driver or whatever. To do this you can use the Dash during the low resolution phase, and bring up 'Software & Updates', then select 'Additional Drivers' tab and select an alternative driver. This worked for me.
