Okay, I have everything installed and I have apt-get and Synaptic working (from what I can tell anyways).
I went through and did an update via Synaptic and it downloaded everything and installed them (per the screens that popped up).

BUT when I go to say Firefox it is still showing version .9.3 and tried to update firestarter via apt-get (following the directions) and I can't add the icon back.

any ideas?

Have you added the extra repositories to your /etc/apt/sources.list file? You need these so that apt/synaptic points to places where newer versions of things like firefox and firestarter can be downloaded from. If you haven't already, go to http://www.ubuntuguide.org/ for the necessary steps on how to do this (just look down the list of how-tos until you come to what you want).

You should still be aware of the above tips, but you might find it easier to wait a couple of weeks and download the next release of Ubuntu, which includes newer versions of firefox etc.
