I think Schneier is wrong that corporations and governments are just now asserting their interests re: the net. It's been that way for years.

People expect their net activities to be cost-free. If the net's users aren't willing to pay for it, then the people who own the resources we use will find other ways to monetize it. If not, they'll go away.

Governments won't permit people and groups considered criminal or hostile to use the net to hide their communications and activities. For all the current concerns about privacy, whenever there's some kind of incident or attack people will ask the security and intelligence agencies, "Why didn't you know?"

I think the day is coming when the DoD reclaims the TCP Protocol (http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc793.txt) by way of "Legislative Mandate" or "Eminent Domain"
