Come to the K side of the force! Kubuntu seems to let you do some of the same things Compiz does. Maybe not all, but then except for the Desktop cube, I never used many compiz options when I had Ubuntu.

And I don't know what I did, but it used to have a big KDE logo as the cap, now it's Kubuntu on blue. ;)

Yaya! Openbox! Super cool theme. How did you get transparency for your obmenu? I didn't think you could do that? I'm also running Debian Openbox on my laptop. I have a couple screenshots on page 2 of this thread if you want to see.

Once again, it's been a few months since I last posted. I hadn't changed my wallpaper in a while, but having just changed it up, I decided to show it off. So here's my current screen:

Full-size screenshots here:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v245/viperdvman/Screenshots/screenshotArch5a.jpg~original

Arch Linux is my primary Linux, though I still always come back to Ubuntu and Ubuntu-based distros. I completely changed up the wallpapers and themes since my last post, though I still run the same Mac OS X style interface, complete with dock, global menu, and app name before the menu. Other than the theme changes, the rest of my interface is all the same. I still use KDE's Homerun as the app launcher, which I can activate via either the Arch logo in the top panel, or the Arch logo in the dock.

Computer: Desktop
Distro: Arch Linux
Desktop Environment: KDE Plasma 4.11.3
Plasma Theme: Androbit (from KDE-Look)
Window Theme: Oxygen Transparent (from AUR)
Color Scheme: Obsidian Red (modified from Obsidian Coast)
Left Wallpaper: Cadillac Elmiraj Concept (from GM Media, though slightly modified)
Right Wallpaper: custom-made 3rd Generation Cadillac CTS collage (16:10 version)
Icons: Oxygencolors v6.3 (Red Glass color)
Dock: Docky ... features include: Anchor logo removed using gconf, Custom launchers for Homerun Launcher, Plasma Activities, and Dolphin... all with custom icons, all pre-made before dropping into Docky
Docky Theme: Classic
Special Features: Dual displays, Homerun Launcher, Global Menu

The icons are Moka with some changes to the defaults done via ala-carte . The Pithos/Pandora Client had no icon and the Unity Tweak icon was changed using a preferences icon from the set. The theme is not displayed and is Moka Dark with the purple changed to a Ubuntu purple variation . Launcher color via Unity Tweak and background from Wallcoo .

Yeah, there are very few icon sets that are truly complete, so that's to be expected, but Moka seems more so than both. It's Faenza all over again, but slightly more cloying still, and I love it. = )

And yeah, I know it was weird to ask about the GTK when I couldn't see it, but the top panel is defined by GTK, too. Although - yours is black, and mine turned charcoal. I like yours better. = P I really like the select color, though. (And ZOMG this is the girliest theme ever, though I did pick light instead of dark.)

The dragon and the snowy mountains look like Skyrim, but the rocks and the stream look hand painted. It could just be some fantasy art, or Skyrim player art.

Interesting.

Personally, I've been smitten by LXDE with the XFCE window manager (Xfwm4).

Beats LXDE/Openbox hands-down -- best of all possible worlds IMO.

If I didn't enjoy +1 Testing so much, that's what I'd be running on ALL of my machines -- not just my portables. ;)

I never really did care for XFCE, maybe its all the Xfce libraries you have to install. IMHO LXDE + Openbox = best of both worlds. LXDE seems a lot more lightweight than XFCE.

LXDE seems a lot more lightweight than XFCE.

Nope, distros make things heavy. if you want to compare them then do a base install and add the DE separately without all the crud distros package with it.

http://blog.xfce.org/2012/05/questions-after-the-4-10-release/

LXDE still consumes less memory

*sigh* I’m not going to rant on this because as a user you should choose the desktop that makes you happy, but anyway it annoys me a tiny bit. So just to throw some information:
LXDE and Xfce are both based on the same toolkit and provide roughly the same set of features. That as a start makes it technically almost impossible to be much better or worse regarding memory usage. I think this whole myth started by comparing two distributions (clue: strcmp (distro_a + 1, distro_b + 1) == 0).
I’m sure Xfce consumes a bit more memory, because more processes are started. Especially when external plugins are added to the panel: a design decision to make the panel more stable.
I don’t know or care where this comparison started, but if somebody does this again the the future, please compare the actual memory usage and don’t use free. Or even better: don’t compare memory usage at all because it is pretty useless.

That said: if I start a default LXDE and Xfce 4.10 desktop (default Arch Linux packages) and use ps_mem.py (http://www.pixelbeat.org/scripts/ps_mem.py), Xfce consumes 2 MiB more memory (same or desktop-equal applications are started). Do whatever you want this is number, as long as you compare apples and apples.

Yes, you are right. I guess what I meant to say is I don't care for XFCE. I have used it before and I don't like the look and the feel of it. I use Debian is because you have a lot more control over what you install by default and they have a great package manager. Ubuntu uses it!
