Hey everybody,

I'm on Ubuntu 12.04 and I'd like to upgrade to 13.04, but I've never done an upgrade since I've been using Ubuntu. I have some files that I need on this computer and I don't want to lose them. So how do I go about upgrading my system without losing my files? Also, I went on the Ubuntu website to get the image for 13.04, but it isn't there...? I couldn't find it. Am I missing something here? Thanks in advance for the help.

You would have to update to 12.10 before you could update to 13.04 but then you would have to update to 13.10 in January 2014 when 13.04 reaches its End of Life.

You might be better off waiting for Ubuntu 14.04 (Trusty Tahr) which is the next LTS Release

As The Spectre points out, you can upgrade only from LTS to the next or from one release to the immediate next. You can't skip versions :(
In any case, where are these files? If they're in /home, the installer promises not to trash them :)

Oh okay, thank you. I think I'll wait it out.

I'm not sure if they're located in /home, how do I check?
