I'm just curious--now that the option is available (and for those of you who don't know it is--User CP > Options > Hide Post Count), do you hide your post count or show it?

Why or why not?

I hide mine because I don't like people thinking I know more than I really do. I'm a beginner of sorts (been on Ubuntu one year and two months), and I don't like being taken for an expert just because I post a lot.

If you are not an expert in Linux or Ubuntu per se, you are certainly an expert in the art of how to help people, aysiu.

I don't hide it... why? Because I've become used to it. I know I am not an expert, though.

I hide my post count because posts in community chat used to count towards your count, than they made them not count for awhile, and now they count again. So the number of posts my profile says I've made really has nothing to do with how many times I've posted. I've posted WELL over the number of posts my profiles says I've has so it doens't mean anything.

I think it is also a badge of pride, perhaps... I am going to remove it, to see how I look without it!

I show mine because:

1. I'm lazy and didn't bother to change the default.

2. It amuses me. Not sure why, but it does.

Why bother hiding the beans gentlemen?
It takes about a day (perhaps two) before someone new to Ubuntu knows just who/m to ask for help.
To make it worse, like stray cats, you don't seem to be able to turf them out into the night...

I show mine because I'm doing a test to see when the titles change over, even though there are a couple of related threads. I noticed some differences when the forums changed over the last couple of weeks.

aysiu, I was dissapointed when you took your count down because I wanted to see it roll over 10k. I do agree with your hiding the count since I can envision new users thinking that you are the expert among experts. You do know your stuff and I would say that you have definitely moved away from being a beginner.

I do feel btw that the ubuntuforums are a big reason I stay with ubuntu, the moderators do an excellent job to keep controversy out of the Ubuntu forums, even in the backyard and this makes me very happy. I just last night considered switching my new computer to Gentoo, but after reviewing the "open" forum in Gentoo I felt they let certain controversy get out of hand. Similar reason why I have started to steer clear of dyne:bolic.

Keeping the forum, and the presentation clean in Ubuntuforums is very important, after all "we are as we all are" and linux distro forums are representative of the self actualization and overall realization of the distro. Here the community and overall well being of Ubuntu, (philosophically, socially, and practically) are kept in check by the hard effort of the moderators and administrators.

I am showing the number of the posts as you can see mostly to "warn" other persons that I am a newbie here.

I usually try to deeply think over my posts and I am sharing either my own experiences with Ubuntu (if they can be of use) or the results of my net-researches on a subject - research is a big part of my professional life and I hope that sharing this ability can help others...

Anyway - if I will ever reach the 1/100 of the number of your posts, aysiu, I start to hide it, too ;)

Wishing everybody nice rest of the day (or night!),

I have chose to display my post count because that sometimes can be useful. Normally, trolls and problem seekers have few posts. If a discussion gets out of control when I'm participating in it, at least one can tell that I'm not here for the trouble. Although I know that often this can be misleading.

I show my post count because I want to see how much I have posted since when I joined the forum (the same month and year as the starter of this thread :) ). Now my next goal is hitting 4000 ;)

I don't hide the number of my post since it only makes other users see how much time I have spent on the forums ( my experience has nothing to do with that number).

I hide mine because it simply doesn't mean anything.

I'm on fora all the time where people have 4,922 posts and they're still totally ignorant jugheads. All the huge count means is that they are persistent nuisances who don't have real lives to go to offline.

If what you post has value and your data works, it doesn't matter what your name is or where you live or how many posts you've made.

The only thing that makes even less sense to me is the "friend list" thing on some sites, which as far as I can tell has no actual function whatever. :-k

I'm on fora all the time where people have 4,922 posts and they're still totally ignorant jugheads. All the huge count means is that they are persistent nuisances who don't have real lives to go to offline. That is true, at least potentially. What a higher post count does tell us on these forums is that a person posting in a grumpy manner is less likely to be a troll...those are usually discovered in the first 10-20 posts and often less. I'm more likely to give someone with a high post count the benefit of the doubt as to their motives...bad day, hungry/tired, etc. Either way I try to treat infractions in a fair manner, but my perspective can't help but be affected a little. Oh, and we can see the number of posts a person has made whether the count is turned on or off anyway, so potential trolls didn't just learn a little secret of how to get away with two or three extra posts from my statements here. :)

I just noticed henriquemaia stated something similar a few posts above...

A lot of new Linux users (and old ones) are experiencing high levels of frustration, which shows in their exasperated tone.

That doesn't make them trolls.

I've never really understood this troll phobia. If you think something's a troll, ignore it. If you're a moderator, delete it.

I've seen lots of posts on Linux fora that were shouted down as trolling when they were obviously not -- just someone who's not a member of the club having a real tough time and daring to point out that Distro XYZ isn't all wonderfulness after all.

I show mine for only one reason: "To know how many posts I've made since I joined."

I don't find the postcount an indicator for:

- How guru somebody is.
- How hardcore somebody is with the community (because there are a lot of useless posts here).
- How n00b someone is.
- Etc.

I've posted WAY more posts than being displayed. Most of them have been posted in 'Ubuntu Cafe'. I find it a good thing that those beans don't count. Most thread over there are just for fun. So seen the circumstances I don't find the postcount weird, false or an indicator for whatever.

I actually take the opposite view from matthew on this one. If someone has a high post count and is acting extremely obnoxious, I tend to be less (not more) forgiving, as I tend to think... well, you should know better by then.

Someone who has few posts and stirs up trouble--I figure that person just doesn't know any better and will shape up if she sticks around in the community long enough. The truth is that if you're a real troll (not just someone a lot of people disagree with), you won't last long here. Eventually, you will get banned or just go away yourself.

Honestly all of the staff try to give people the benefit of the doubt and defuse frustrations, etc., long before playing the troll card, even in our minds. For what it's worth, I wholeheartedly agree with your first and last paragraphs.

As to what you say in the middle, we would be in the middle of a huge firestorm of fury if we started deleting posts. Believe me, that's not going to happen unless it's porn, really disgusting spam or so hateful and vile that we don't want anyone to see it ever (and then we save it in a special place in case evidence is required). Threads or posts may be moved to the Backyard or the Jail, but they are almost never deleted, and when they are the staff can still access them if necessary.

You're right. But one cannot forget something - it's just a way to know something more about an otherwise totally obscure character - the forum member. If you a regular (more that the average post number), at least you know something about that person - he/she is a regular. If his tone matches his post number, you know a bit more from that person - his opinion matters, he/she has some experience.

Take an example on aysiu. He has a huge post number. Huge is huge. 9000+. He and azz. If their tone was crap, you simple would ignore this number, thinking that this guy was simply a jerk with nothing to do than to hang around on these forums. But as far as I'm concerned, almost everything I have read from these two (aysiu and azz) match perfectly with their post number - they are senior members.

That's what post count is all about. Just a way of figuring who's the person behind the post. It sheds a very dim light on the character of the poster, but it sheds some light, nonetheless.

I agree with you in theory, henriquemaia, but from practical experience, I've found that people tend to treat me differently (in a bad way) because of a high post count. Since I've turned my post count off, I've been treated just like everyone else (which is a good thing).

There were some expressed sentiments of the "Oh, well, aren't you mister high-and-mighty, then?" variety. Now... there aren't.

That will happen also, but I think you're wise enough to deal with that. And yes, your post count is a status. But not by itself. By what people read from you. You bet that makes a whole lot of a difference. Much more that to have Ubuntu Forum Staff or whatever. I think that's a big advantage you have there. And that also brings quality to this community.

Just remember that the average age spectrum around here must be somewhat low (my guess). And it is very important to have some role models around to make the difference. If you were a jerk you could bet I wouldn't be writing this.

So what are you trying to say the validity or non-validity of anyone who post here is based on how old they are, and how large or small their post count is.

Like I said before, every bit of the puzzle shed a dim light on the character of the forum member. Ultimately, what determinnes the validity of what he/she says is what he/she writes. But there are some things you can determine by joining the pieces together. Just that.

And about my previous post I don't intend to be offensive in any way - if I was, my appologies.

Mine is showing because I never really thought about it. I suppose it might serve as a warning as my post count and ubuntu experience are pretty low.

Reminds me of a funny story, though. I used to hang out over at http://advrider.com . It's an adventure motorcycle forum. We were organizing a ride and one of the guys we hadn't met wanted to come along. He had been on the forum for quite some time, was a prolific poster and had become a moderator of one of the forums. Turns out he had less than 600 miles total on a motorcycle, was afraid to lane split (legal in CA) and had never been off-road before. He kept dropping his bike and was unable to pick it up.

It was really strange going back and re-reading his posts giving advice and such and realizing they were complete BS.

This is not to say anything about anyone besides the guy in the story, just that I've never assumed a high post count meant anything other than somebody liked to hang out in that forum.

I like the post count. I think it's cool to see how many posts people have made. I know some people who have 1 or 2 posts are very knowledgeable (more so than me :D ) but I am more apt to accept suggestions from people with more "experience", such as aysiu. I kind of miss the post counts since so many people are hiding them now.

I'm thinking about hiding my count. Why? I don't want to be seen as a person I'm not. And when the bean hype goes into the 1000+ I don't want to be seen as a 'chat addict' who doesn't has anything useful to say.

P.S = Mine was supposed to be hidden too, could you see mine earlier?

*Note* I also see that the users details are back to the top of the posts rather than to the left of them :( Dang, I dont like it this way :(

I don't really pay attention to anybody's postcount, certainly not my own, so there sems to be little point in hiding it. At least from my point of view.

Surely the contents of any post should be much more important the the number of previous posts by the author?

I just don;t really get the whole 'postcount equals knowledge equals status' thing really....

seriously, it doesn't matter what other people think about a persons bean count :). everyone knows that bean count counts for nothing. there may well be linux/unix system administrators with about 20 years experience who may have about 5 posts, but who know linux inside out.

i show my bean count because it was enabled when i first joined and i see no reason to change.

when i give opinion or just try to help, i size up users or estimate their level of knowledge in ubuntu linux, by their bean count and join date, that way i'll decide if i go for the gory details in helping them or just straight to the point. same way in giving opinion or criticism if i see the user has one of the earliest join date and their bean count is far more greater than the average user, i might just be careful on what i say, because the probability that they know more than i do is maybe higher. that's just me though ;)

I don't hide my bean count, I suppose because its the default and I don't have a good enough reason to bother hiding it. Although I've got a pretty pathetic post rate, I do lurk in the forums a fair bit and almost always find answers ready and waiting for me, after just a little hunting. I would thank the people who wrote the various howto's etc that I've used but it seems like it would just be a bit of a pointless bump.
I've been using Ubuntu now for just under a year, but only recently have I completely left M$ win behind. I still consider myself very much a beginner, but if I spot something I can help someone with I try.

The forums and community really make using Ubuntu a pleasure. Anyone who's written a HowTo, I thank you!

Well, guess this is all about showing (or not) a bit of who you are. Showing or not showing bean counts, that is the question ;-) It's like picking up a pseudo, an avatar, a location, a signature ... everything that allows you a choice.
And I'll skip on how possibly showing the gender came along in the discussion :-þ

So I do not hide my bean counts, just because I do not pay much attention to it. If some of the top ranking posters were to just join, same skills, same kindness, same willingness to help, would it make a difference to you ? Not to me.

My eyes get more curious about avatars though, and I like when members show their location. Gives me a global community feeling, we are all spread around this small world and all meeting in here because we share interests.

Thanks. I've been wondering about that, too.

forrestcupp at 303 beans that is quite a bit, I do have to say when someone is helping me I never look at their beans, just the advice they are giving.

I do clue into avatars for quick recognition but I find the beans are more of a novelty then anything else.

The bean count does not communicate something I find useful. Some of our member friends somehow tend to derive things from the bean count which are not there.

Just a few weeks ago, one complained about the bean count being misleading; he even accused others of driving their bean count up by senseless posting, thus giving themselves the appearance of being knowledgeable.

I feel it does count but should not hinder someone taking another seriously , I donate about 5 hours a week to helping people and have been for awhile , this is my way of giving back on top of donations , My post count is still very low , so imagine how much time someone with 2,500 has donated to helping others and the progression of this thing some of us hold so dear.

I think someone with that much deserves respect not for their internet skills but for their dedication to Ubuntu and the idea which was the catalyst that propelled this thing into the realm of Linux distrobution domination.

well.... someone posted a lot thats for sure, but maybe it were questions on how to burn a .iso , you never know, on the other hand someone with 1 bean over here might also have posted a lot on for example linuxquestions.org, just a forum where i think the average poster is just a tad more technical skilled then here.

I still don't think its judgment... more like an achievement. Even if it was 2000 post just to get a printer to work, or being the person posting 2000 times helping to get the printer to work, some ware out there someone gained knowledge and understanding of ubuntu.

2000 post to me is a massive effort in supporting other people. even if you asked the questions.

I like stupid people that make a lot of posts with a high bean count -- You get to know the people and b/c they have a high bean count, you are much less likely to say RTFM. I think bean count is indicative of how active you are in the community, not necessarily knowledge -- so hence frequent contributors likely receive "preferential" treatment. You would hope someone with a higher bean count would pick up some things on the forums from time to time -- and would hopefully be a tad more knowledgeable than the 1-2 beaners. I know its a stretch, but I hope that assumption is true!

The more questions you ask, the more answers you get, with which you can answer the same questions you asked that were posted by another... & on it goes at varying rates according to the individual.

Beans are generally just an indication of community participation, not of Linux expertise; I have seen super high level expertise exhibited in posts by people with the tiniest bean count.

I don't know why some make any fuss at all about beans, they are just window dressing?

Anyway now the thanks & thanked counts have been added for those that need to get a value reading exhibited on themselves & others.

I haven't looked to see if they can be turned off too! :lolflag:
