View Full Version : [ubuntu] Strange freeze-ups with 64 bit 12.04 LTS when using 12.16 Opera browser

Been getting these weird freeze-ups for awhile now. They just occur at random.
What happens when surfing is, Opera will freeze/lock up. All is unresponsive for a few seconds, then the whole monitor screen will momentarily dim down, then after a second or two go back to full brightness with everything going back to normal! In the past Opera would just crash and you would have to restart it. Now Opera no longer crashes but instead goes into this freeze-up, dim down, then goes back to normal operation cycle.

Anyone else experience this and know what is going on?

Anyone?

Have a feeling this is Opera related and posted this bug there also.

There was some kind of website 'hiccup freeze' that caused this double post...sorry about that.
Tried to delete it but it seems like this Forum does not give us this capability to delete postings made in error......

FWIW, just got done running BleachBit and BleachBit as Admisistrator, which is done once a month to clear out the junk and temp files that builds up. Have found after running them Ubuntu runs a bit better and noticed this this 'freeze-up, dim down, then goes back to normal operation' buggy behavior has not occurred. It did happen yesterday several times.

Could there be any related connection that running BleachBit and BleachBit as Admisistrator help to eliminate/clean up this bug when using Opera?

I used opera in conjunction with bleach-bit regularly as a second browser without problems. There hasn't been a lot of work done with the 12.16 version of Opera because of focus on the web kit/chromium based version which is still not available for Linux. If you don't mind losing your add-ons and settings you could delete .opera folder in home/hidden folders and upon restart of the browser you will have a new clean profile. A corrupt profile can cause unstable browser behavior. Opera 12.16 is being maintained for security , but is not improved and I last used it with 12.10.

Thanks for the idea.
Don't really have any add-ons and not sure what settings will be effected. More concerned with losing my 200+ Bookmarks! Will Bookmarks be lost doing this? Oh and haven't gone into 'hidden folders' in awhile. How do you get into hidden files again?

You can export your bookmarks and use Ctrl + H to enter hidden folders.

OK, went into .Opera folder in home/hidden folders, it's 120.1 MB in size. Delete it all?

Here's: .Opera folder screenshot,

Got this bit of advice from Opera Forums and thought of passing it along.

Instead of deleting .opera you can rename it. It will have the same effect of creating a new clean profile. If new clean profile doesn't help, you will know this wasn't the cause of the trouble and you can rename the old profile back.

Running BleachBit and BleachBit as Admisistrator did not help or correct this bug as I had hoped earlier.
This 'freeze-up, dim down, then goes back to normal operation' buggy behavior has returned and still occurs.
Suspect Opera is the culprit here.

OK finally tried doing this about an hour ago.
Renamed .opera and almost mediately a new .opera was created to replace it, right next to the .opera just renamed.

Opened up Opera browser and began using it all bookmarks remained. Had feared they may be lost but they weren't. At first Opera seemed to run OK but after about a half hour this 'weird freeze-ups/unresponsiveness for a few seconds, then the whole monitor screen will momentarily dim down, then after a few seconds go back to full brightness with everything going back to normal' bug returned.

Noticed this bug happens mostly on Facebook and had assumed it may be due to their servers being overloaded. However this bug can occur on many other standard websites at any time randomly.

FWIW since my last post this 'bug' seems to have lessened and may be gone.

In the last few days this 'freeze-up, dim down, then goes back to normal operation cycle' has not occurred.

Don't know if it has been addressed by Opera or what......
