god.. this is a decent distro, but alot of packages are missing or not even installed by default that very well should be.

this is only day two.. and i'm still in the: Install this, oh no.. it needs part 1,2,3,4 as dependencies.. get part one.. OH NO, it needs A B and C to function, get a, OH NO.. it needs X and Y to function

repeat ad nasueam.

its actually getting pretty damn old.

There are 3rd party procucts to help you with ths initial bit, should you choose to use them.
Automatix, (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=77)
Easy Ubuntu, (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=86)
Bumps (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=143)

Plus, just to add, there are good reasons for most of this stuff not being on a default install, not least of which are legal issues. Anyway, hope the above is useful.

What are you using to install packages? Synaptic usually tells you if something has dependencies and adds them to the install list.

Downloading them from a site and then installing, however, can be a real pain (even more so when you don't have a net connection).

For your initial set up, you want to try something like EasyUbuntu, or Automatix (I recommend this), as they'll take a lot of hard work out of things. (Both linked above)

If you want help it would be a good idea to tell us what you are trying to do.

This belongs in the cafe. Also, since the OP's main purpose in posting was to blow off some steam rather than to get help I think the reason for this thread's existence has been satisfied.
