Suggestions on new AMD desktop pc

Hello, I'm building a new desktop, and I would like some suggestions on it.
Can the memory run at 1866 without any overclocking? Also, would you suggest the FX-6350 or the FX-8320?
Any other comment or suggestion is of course very welcome.

Definitely 8320 over 6350, 8320 is a bit more expensive but boasts four modules (eight "cores") and it's basically an underclocked FX 8350 which runs at 3.5GHz instead of 4GHz. I have an 8320 and that thing is pretty good, on stock clocks without turbo and C6 I can undervolt to 1.154V at which it uses a bit more than 95W, overclocked it hits 4.6GHz on stock 1.32V. The only downside that affects all FX chips (and some Phenoms/Athlons) is that AMD raises the votage sky-high out of the box so they heat up and use lots of power.

As for memory, it can run at 1866MHz. Even though the RAM speed chart claims max memory speed in four slot dual-channel is 1333 it can use 4x1866 or 4x2011 (if mobo supports it) sticks that way.

I got three suggestions though. First one is getting a better mobo, both 8320 and 6350 are 125W TDP CPUs and they should be put in a mobo with an 8+2 power phase with VRM cooling while the Asus M5A97 is a 4+2, has some VRM heatsinks though. Higher-end 970 chipset mobos like the Gigabyte 970A-UD3 with 8+2 power phase are pretty good, you may hit higher clocks with a 990X chipset (debatable) but 970s are pretty good too. Don't get me wrong, the CPU will work on a 4+2 mobo but the mobo won't last as long and you can fry it outright by trying to overclock.

Second, get a better PSU. Cheap PSUs tend to blow-out when coupled with power-hungry chips like 125W/200W FX-series. Something like a 550W XFX Core Edition Pro would be good, it ain't modular but it's a quality SeaSonic unit that'll take the load and last.

Third, the cooler, Alpine is on-par or worse than the FX stock cooler, and even the stock cooler is crap. FX chips don't like to overheat, get a decent cooler, something like Scythe Ninja, Arctic Cooling Freezer 13, Cooler Master 212 Evo and so on should be enough. Some use water cooling but since the results of those closed systems are pretty much like those of the coolers I just mentioned, you're only paying for visual appeal, unless you build your own LCS.

Other than that, it's a pretty good build.

those 8 core chip are not true 8 cores they are more like calling a i7 a 8 core core, (an i7 crushes a amd 8 core)
if this is for gaming go with the fx-6300 or fx-6350, you will gain nothing from a 8 core and you would be better off with a i5
new if you are doing media editing then a AMD 8 core is worth a look, thoes 8 core chips need a high quality motherboard to handle the power draw
i would suggest a rosewill capstone 550W PSU, they are good quality units with a 7 year warranty; Seasonic makes good units and they usually have a 5 year warranty
unless the DDR3 1866 cost less than DDR3 1600 don't bother, only use for 1866 is to run less that that but over 1600 when over-clocking using the bus multiplier, i only recommend 1866 for an APU using its integrated gpu unless it is cheaper to get 1866
don't get that cpu cooler, get a hyper 212 +/evo if it will fit in the case, if that is not a option go for a hyper TX3
make sure you get ram that does not have tall heat spreaders that will interfere with big cpu coolers as in prevent having both installed

Your components listed look very similar to my newest computer build. I went with the 6300 8 gig of ram and instead of Nvidia I used the AMD HD 7750 card. With ubuntu installed and the AMD proprietary driver I get 120 fps playing Minecraft, and during testing found I could game all of my windows games very easily as well. I agree with the previous post that the 8 core cpu is just icing on top and that the 6 core will more than handle your Linux needs. Sounds like you've got a nice build have fun!
