When attempting to install Ubuntu 12.04 side by side with XP OS, the desktop of Ubuntu shows itself as totally pixilated. I have attempted this install a number of time with no success.

Your help and guidance would be appreciated.

By the way, I am a nubi to Ubuntu. Should I have posted on the Beginners Forum?

What hardware you have? Have you enough RAM? Because it needs a lot of memory to work. Not alone Ubuntu need that but also windows needs memory to run.
Why not a dualboot? Of course you need enough space on your HD.
Give some details. ThanX

Think about this: in 2014 Microsoft stops with support for XP. So, maybe you can complete remove XP of your computer and install Ubuntu. But think than about to do a Back up of all your documents, photo's, etc....

Heir 4c,

I appreciate your response.

My Hardware is as follows:

Dell Inspiron 530 (2007)
4mb Ram Memory
C: Drive available storage = 267gb
XP (service pack 3)
2.2 Gh Processor (Duel)
DVD Optical Drive
Display: NVIDIA GEforce 8300gs

I trust this is enough info. If not let me know what other info you need.

I want to run side by side with XP so that I can get to know this new animal (ubuntu)
before I need to decide in which direction to go when MS support ends next April.

probably 4 GB ram, not 4 MB.

anyway you can try boot option nomodeset. see if it helps.: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions

also instead of wubi you can try virtualbox. it seems like you have enough ram: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/virtualbox

also try some of the other from the Ubuntu family such as Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu...
