i searched around a lot to find a cheap way to run 3 monitors with ubuntu without a video card. i found that the intel haswell chip supports 3 monitors, but i also found that many struggled to make it work. here's what i did and it pretty much just worked without any trouble.

left monitor: DVI
center monitor: mini display port using an active converter to DVI
right monitor: VGA

the struggle for me was to find a mini display port to DVI converter that would work properly. many people reported issues with them. it seemed that passive was a bad idea, but even the active ones had poor reports. here's what i settled on:

Accell B087B-006B UltraAV Mini DisplayPort to DVI-D Single-Link Active Adapter ATI Certified (Black) (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004071ZXA/ref=pe_385040_30332190_pe_175190_21431760_M3T1_ST1 _dp_1)

once i plugged it in, it worked great. i did have to use it as the center monitor because i could not otherwise rearrange it. also, the brightness/contrast was very different using the display port.

hopefully this helps save someone else a bunch of time.
