They should have done this much sooner.

The Gendarmerie says it will have 72,000 PCs moved over to Ubuntu by next summer, and they will continue to migrate because it saves so much money. And here’s the important bit: in their experience using open source software so far, the total cost of ownership falls 40 percent, which is massive when you are talking about tens of thousands of machines.

Well, iirc they started the process quite a few years back with OpenOffice and at least 5 years ago with Ubuntu.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GendBuntu states the desktops migration started in 2008 and ended up this september.

We've been integrating Ubuntu with our customized XFCE environment on our machines at work (large public school district). It's been a pretty successful undertaking. We have almost 2,000 systems now running this setup and will have 1,700 more being added to the fleet this winter.

This is really awesome news. Hope more and more companies and organizations are doing this.

This is epic, now if only Lawton Public Schools would switch over to Debian or Ubuntu, as opposed to sticking with XP probably long after MS kills it off, and the zero-day-forever vulnerability starts showing...

I wish the Police in the United States would switch to Ubuntu.
