Does anyone remember an older version with a rat like logo?

I have tried X and L ubuntu on and older XP laptop to no avail. I was able to run a version two years ago, it had a rat like logo is all I can remember.

It does sound like you are talking about the XFCE logo

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Xfce_logo.svg

What exactly does "to no avail" mean? what are you trying to do and in what way is it not working?

You can search for that version here i guess: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Ubuntu_releases

But it would help us to help you if you give your system specifications and as steeldriver said if you can give details about "to no avail".

I have an old emachine 5414 laptop that I was at one time able to run (apparently a version of xubuntu) on it.

(emachine specs; http://www.computer-specifications.com/specifications/eMachines-eMachinesM5414-Specs.html)

Currently the laptop WinOS if defunct, it won't fully open, so, I need to do a full install of some version of ubuntu from a DVD.

I have download both lubuntu and xubuntu, on another WinOS system, right clicked on them and burned them to the DVD, put the DVD in the emachine and both started to run because XP did not start up and they showed they were installing, bot gave and error than screen goes off.

Older versions of Xubuntu will be older versions of Ubuntu only.

Xubuntu = Ubuntu + Xfce Desktop Environment

If I am not mistaken, Xubuntu never came out with an Distro of their own.

From XFCE.

Don't know what you mean by that?

Xubuntu is its own distro in its own right.
Based on Ubuntu, but developed on its own, within the framework of the Ubuntu ecosystem.
