View Full Version : [SOLVED] HowTo: preinstall Linux for selling used PC (without a specified user)

Hi folks,

I haven't found a guide to this problem, so I would like to ask:

is there a way to preinstall Ubuntu on a PC which I would like to sell on eBay without specifying a user account?

It is possible to preinstall Windows and Mac OS, so when the new owner starts the PC the first time, he is asked for username/password and then the installation process is finalized.

I haven't found a similar guide for Ubuntu/Linux in general. So: how can I preload Ubuntu on the to-be-sold PC, is it possible?

Best regards,
Ricardo Cristof

That easy. For more info search for 'OEM install Ubuntu'. There is a ton of info about this. ;)

Hi
In Ubuntu 13.04, the last option in the boot menu is for OEM?manufacturer install. You can find more in this link https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Ubuntu_OEM_Installer_Overview

I just provided that link. Please read all posts in a thread, not just the first or the title. Thanks.

Hi Bucky Ball,

wow, what...? That is incredibly easy and awesome, thanks! :-)

I searched for hours on g**gle using terms like "preinstall ubuntu", "prepare PC with ubuntu for sale" etc. and didn't find this help document... something's wrong with the semantic web...

As I cannot edit that page due to missing rights, could you please add some tags/information regarding its usefullness for private users, who sell their used PCs/help their friends?

Best regards,
Ricardo Cristof

I hear you. I had that problem when I was looking for how to do this a few years ago. OEM install! Right! ;)

I'll look into your other request. Good luck.

(PS: The OEM install allows the user to boot up and fill in user/password, location fields, blah blah, just like a bought one!)
