I tried upgrading 10.04 to 12.04. It didn't go so well. I made a backup per the instructions in askubuntu. I untar'd the backup archive but now my system won't boot as I get a error 14 in libc-2.11.1.so and then a kernel panic. When I untar'd I did get an error but I can't remember what the exact error was. I have two partitions with this being my root system and then everything else under /var/lib. I loaded a liveDVD and noticed that /var/lib goes to nowhere so I suspect this could be part of the problem. I also tried moving the libc-2.11.1.so from the live DVD to my system and then reboot but it didn't fix the problem. I still have the backup file so I don't know if I should try to untar it again but I'm not sure how to do this. Would I just go to /media/mountpoint/ and then untar from there? Anyone have any experience on this? Am I SOL and I'll have to reinstall the OS?

What exactly does the backup contain?
