switch to text console not displaying anything

When I switch to text console (alt+ctrl+f1) it switches to a blank screen, cycling through f2..f6 same things, f7 gets me back to the desktop. I have the proprietary driver installed, AMD/ATI (latest catalyst) as it's the only way I can get best resolution - multi-monitor display support working, the open source drivers looks very, very horrible.

Is there a way to get this work or am I out of luck?

To me it sounds like tty is off screen. Something I have not dealt with, just a possible direction to pursue.
