I know, I know. I can just click on another thread, instead of whining about it here. But well, its the internet, which was created for very specific purposes. Whining, unreal tournament and porn.

Why oh why is it that we have to spend so much time talking about windows ?
Can't we just talk about why Linux is cool, or what we can do to make it cooler, or cool app's or funny games or jokes about things George Bush said, or whatever ?

Most Ubuntu users were Windows users at one time or another or still are (by dual-boot or for work/school).

Windows is part of Bug #1, whose fixing Mark Shuttleworth has cited as one of the goals of Ubuntu.

People will be talking about Windows in the Ubuntu Cafe for a long time to come.

Very true. I just have to accomodate myself to it.

very true. I used windows for years. But there's plenty of windows forums I can go to, if I want to talk about that. Ah well. Just venting a little :)

It's a legitimate gripe. I just think you're fighting a losing battle. I mean, I don't want to see any more "I'm leaving this sucky OS" or "Ubuntu isn't ready for the desktop" threads either, but what can you do?

I used Windows for 5 years. I even have a section in my Opera bookmarks called "Windows Nostalgia". Only Winamp there ATM.

Windows is the most commonly used operating system in the world. It would be silly for any software professional like me to ignore its existence. Operating systems MUST be compared to see which ones are best at which jobs and for which users. What better place to do it than a forum dedicated to one of those operating systems? People here generally seem to know a lot about both Windows and Ubuntu. It's an os melting pot here....

Remember, if the world became restricted to one O/S and that O/S was ours, we 'd be no better than Microsoft. Unlike them, we shouldn't be afraid of a little competition or adversary.

I suggest talking it over with the other 'software professionals'. Hint: You won't find many of them here, as any Windows vs Linux thread easily proves.

What confuses me a bit is why there is an Other Linux Talk forum, and not just an Other Operating Systems forum. Talk about other Linux distros is arguably a lot more on topic than talk about some other OS, no matter how many people might use it.
The OLT forum even has the subtitle 'Discuss other linux distro's and OS's here.', but i could only find two Windows related threads in there, while there are four of them in the first three pages of the Cafe (only counting the ones that explicitly mention it in the title, not the 'Is Linux ready to take over the desktop' type stuff).

I even wrote a my 2 cents about it which can be read here (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=128491).

The bottomline is exactly Aysiu states it. A lot of GNU/Linux users have dealt with Microsoft. Except users there's also another factor. GNU/Linux distro's are made to offer the same and a lot more functionality. Since therefor they are a treat to corporate entities, there's a lot of talking, promoting and etc. going. It keeps the dust from settling.

Linux has been around for a long time, corporations that could profit from its use are well aware of the option, and they generally don't do their research in some web forum.
Also. if you seriously think you can promote Linux through these discussions, it is a bit pointless to do so here. Go to a Windows forum instead, I bet they'll love it when you start extolling the virtues of Linux.

Tricky to trasmit it down phone lines though.

I'm still working on how to implement "cockpunch over IP".
