I've Ubuntu 13.04 on an Aspire 7745G laptop. At random (less than 50% of the time), Unity boots with the sound muted. Clicking on the unmute restores the sound just fine. This is just an annoyance. At home, I plug in a speaker system into the headphone jack. At work, just the built-in speakers. I haven't been able to detect a definate pattern to see if this is related or not. Anybody have any ideas why this happens?

I am also running Ubuntu 13.04, coincidentally on a couple of old Aspire laptops (5750, and 5550) and this also happens to me occasionally, but I know why. These laptops are shared among my two daughters, my wife, and myself, and each of us has a separate account. It seems the Mute setting must be set at the system level, because if one person mutes the sound and later logs off, the next person to log in has the sound muted, even if they did not have it muted when they last logged off.

I would think this is a bug, but it has not been worth it for me to look into it.

Interesting, but only one account on this laptop...
