When trying to install latest update to 3.5.0-39, a window flashes up during the install portion with the following error:

“Sorry, the program "gnome-panel" closed unexpectedly

Your computer does not have enough free memory to automatically analyze the problem and send a report to the developers.”

The rest of the install seems to proceed normally. I restart as requested, grub pops up, select 3.5.0-39 and the system will not boot. I get a terminal screen:

“No caching mode page present
Assuming drive cache: write “

The error repeats two more times.
I then try to reboot and choose previous version; I get the same error. This problem is repeatable as I tried the upgrade twice with the exact same results.

I am installing to 100GB SDD (75% free space), system has 8GB of RAM.
I am able to recover with image back up of previous version. Any suggestions how to complete upgrade?

I noticed in text flashing by “Error: Problem with depmod” I could not copy or remember what else was displayed. Anyway, I did reboot successfully. Not sure what a depmod problem is? I guess I will continue slowly updating vice doing all at once untill I figure what the problem is. Suggestions are appreciated.

The error: “Sorry, the program "gnome-panel" closed unexpectedly
Your computer does not have enough free memory to automatically analyze the problem and send a report to the developers.” returned. However, I was able to reboot. I will proceed to Gnome updates next. Recommendations are appreciated.

After reading on ask ubuntu many others having similar issues as me being related to NVIDIA, I opted to re-install the NVIDIA as recommended with the following commands:

sudo apt-get remove nvidia-*
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current-updates
sudo shutdown -r now

No errors, all is working fine, update manger is up to date.
