So I see the slogan kind of often, but what does it mean? I don't know much about what GNU is, only that the GNU project's goal was to give computer users 'freedom'. But what exactly does the slogan mean?

It is just a play on words. Gnu can be pronounced "new", so a "new" generation, as opposed to the "old" generation of windows (or Mac or whatever).

(Is the OP a troll? Did I just get suckered?)

Hi physman2.

The slogan:

Linux: the choice of a GNU generation.
It's a playful phrase based on the pronunciation of the word GNU, which could be (wrongly) pronounce as:

Linux: the choice of a NEW generation.
There's a very entertaining movie about the history of Linux, the GNU project and the roles of Richard Stallman, and Linus Torvalds. It is called "Revolution OS". I believe these days it is available on youtube.

Regards.

BTW, RMS suggests Gnu be pronounced (in english) with a hard g. I read some article where someone was going to Africa to hear how the natives really pronounce the name for this animal.

Linux: the choice of a NEW generation.

Loosely speaking, this can be seen as an allusion to this (http://youtu.be/2Md5lPyuvsk) classic commercial.

It's a play on words from the old Pepsi slogan, "The choice of a new generation".

I was part of the Pepsi Generation--and I would rather not think about it. But yes, the Gnu generation is a play on that Pepsi marketing campaign. A campaign which ended when Michael Jackson had his hair catch on fire during a commercial shoot. I can't think of an Gnu equivalent. Well, I can: RMS's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Stallman) beard catching fire during a free software speech. But I don't think that has happened yet.
