Disable Kanji in IME

Hello all I am very new, but thankful to be here. I searched first, but i am still confused. I managed to set my keyboard up and i am able to type in Hiragana, but when i hit space to type a new word, it turns it to kanji when i hit it again, it gives me options for that same word in Katakana and other options. i just want to hit space and type another word, so how do i disable this? I would also like to be able to do this in Firefox (type in Hiragana) as well. Thank you and if this has been asked, please forgive me.

oops. (edit) I am on ubunu 10.04. Also easypeasy install and I installed my fonts in Anthy and such.

I figured it out. You have to hit enter first and then <space>to keep the Hiragana from converting into Kanji I hope this helps some one else in the future.
